my friend the middle-aged white man
wife and child and house and car
and a gauss belly curve
staggers through the mire
of discarded old
written-down dried-out beliefs
each one an ex-breakthrough
from the studies and offices of reason
struggles for a statistical average
a little more kaufkraft
a little less zukunftsangst
all the while
mistaking symbols for real things
no such thing
